What Students Need to Do

Students identify familiar Virginia and national holidays and tell, in simple words, why people observe them. They connect each holiday to a person, event, idea, symbol, or community tradition.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a holiday picture or calendar card, a student names the holiday and gives one accurate reason it is observed. The student describes one way communities mark the day without claiming every family celebrates it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think holidays are only days off school or times for gifts and parties. They may confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day, or assume every family observes holidays in the same way.

How to Assess It

Show cards for Veterans Day, Independence Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Ask each student to choose one, tell what it honors, and name one way people observe it.

   Give pairs holiday picture cards and a yearly calendar, then have them place each card in the month when it usually occurs.

   Ask how a community can honor a day when families observe it differently, then record one student example beside a class drawing.

3. 03

   Play Holiday Match with cards showing names, people, events, and symbols, and require students to explain each match before keeping it.

   Examine a local parade flyer, memorial photo, or city calendar and identify the holiday and how the community marks it.
