What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use portraits, short texts, maps, and timelines to identify important people in Virginia history. They explain what each person did and how it helped change Virginia.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can match people with accurate contributions. The student can use a complete sentence to explain how one person helped Virginia.

Common Misconceptions

Students may mix up George Washington and Booker T. Washington, or treat Pocahontas as only a story character. They may think everyone lived at the same time or name a job without explaining the person's contribution.

How to Assess It

Give students picture cards for Chief Powhatan, Maggie L. Walker, and Barbara Johns. Have them match each person to a contribution and complete, "___ helped Virginia by ___."

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a floor timeline by placing portrait cards and contribution cards beside labeled time periods.

  2. Ask students to write or discuss, "Which Virginia changemaker would you thank, and what would you thank that person for?"

  3. Play a memory game in which students match each person's portrait with a card describing that person's contribution.

  4. Show photos of Virginia schools, roads, and buildings named for these people, then discuss why communities honor them.
