What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate Werowocomoco, Jamestown, and their own city or county on a Virginia map. They tell why early places mattered and compare community life long ago with life today.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a map, students can point to and name the required locations. They can describe one fact about each early site and one clear change in housing, travel, work, or communication.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse Werowocomoco with Jamestown or think both were English settlements. They may mix up cities, counties, and states, or treat all past communities as alike.

How to Assess It

Give students a labeled Virginia map and two picture pairs showing past and present life. Ask them to circle Werowocomoco and Jamestown, star their locality, and explain one change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place picture cards for Werowocomoco, Jamestown, and the local community on a large floor map of Virginia.

  2. Ask students to finish the prompt, “Life in a Virginia community changed because people now use…”

  3. Play a map relay where students match place cards and picture clues to labeled locations on a Virginia map.

  4. Compare an old local photograph with a current one, then list changes in buildings, roads, transportation, or jobs.
