What Students Need to Do: Students find their home community and nearby named places on a Virginia map. They use labels, boundaries, and a map key to tell which city or county they located.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a labeled state map, a student points to and names the local city or county without guessing. The student can show its location compared with another familiar Virginia place.
Common Misconceptions: Students may point to Virginia as a whole rather than one local area. They may treat every dot as a city or every outlined area as a county. Some confuse a mailing address name with the county where the home or school is located.
How to Assess It: Give students a labeled Virginia map. Ask them to circle their local city or county and place a star on one nearby community.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a laminated Virginia map, sticky dots, and locality cards, then have them mark their city or county and one nearby place.
Ask, “How can you use this map to show where our community is in Virginia?” Students explain their answer to a partner.
Play Map Detective by naming nearby places while students cover each location with a counter on individual Virginia maps.
Use a Virginia road map to trace a route from the school’s community to a nearby city or county.
