What Students Need to Do: Students find the United States on both a flat map and a globe. They find Virginia on a U.S. map and explain that Virginia is one state within the country.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can point to the United States on a map and globe without hints. The student can locate Virginia on a U.S. map and describe it as part of the United States.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Virginia is a separate country rather than a state. They may point to any place on the East Coast or expect Virginia to appear clearly on every globe.
How to Assess It: Give each child a globe and a U.S. outline map. Say, "Point to the United States on the globe, then circle Virginia on the map."

Lesson moves

Give pairs a globe and sticky dots, then have them mark the United States and place a smaller dot on Virginia.
Students complete the prompt, "Virginia is part of the United States because..." and share their answers with a partner.
