What Students Need to Do: Students use labels, shapes, and land and water clues to find places at different scales. They connect Virginia to the United States and North America. They identify continents and oceans on flat maps and globes.
What Mastery Looks Like: On a map or globe, the student accurately points to Virginia, the United States, and any named continent or ocean. The student explains that Virginia is within the United States.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call Virginia a country or treat the United States and North America as the same place. They may think blue areas are countries or expect maps and globes to look identical. They may confuse the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
How to Assess It: Give each student a simple world map and a U.S. map, then say, “Circle Virginia; mark the United States, North America, and Atlantic Ocean.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs a globe, a U.S. map, and sticky dots, then have them mark Virginia, the country, one continent, and one ocean.
Students write one sentence from the prompt: Virginia is inside ___, which is part of the continent called ___.
Play a location relay where teams draw a card and point to the named place on a wall map or globe.
Show a weather map and ask students to find Virginia, then name the larger country and nearby ocean.
