What Students Need to Do: Students locate major Civil War battles and events in Virginia and connect each place to what happened there. They identify Manassas, Fredericksburg, Hampton Roads, Richmond, and Appomattox Court House.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can label the major sites on a Virginia map. They can match each site with key people, events, and outcomes, including Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse Manassas with Bull Run, though both names refer to the same battle. They may call Appomattox a battle or confuse the Monitor and Merrimack with land forces.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank Virginia map and five event clues. Ask them to place and name Manassas, Fredericksburg, Hampton Roads, Richmond, and Appomattox Court House.

Lesson moves

Place labeled battle cards on a large floor map of Virginia, then add leader, event, and outcome cards to each location.
