What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize and name the United States flag and the Virginia flag. They use visible details, such as stars, stripes, colors, and the state seal, to tell them apart.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly points to each flag when shown several choices. The student names one feature that helped, such as the stars and stripes or Virginia’s seal on blue.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every red, white, and blue flag the United States flag. They may also choose any blue flag as Virginia’s without checking for the state seal.
How to Assess It
- Show four flag cards, including the United States and Virginia flags. Ask, “Point to each flag, name it, and tell one detail you noticed.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs printed flag cards to sort into United States, Virginia, and other, then circle the stars, stripes, or seal.
Ask students to complete this prompt: “I know this is the Virginia flag because I see _____.”
Play Flag Detective by revealing one small section of a flag at a time while students guess and explain their clue.
Take a school walk to find displayed flags, then have students name each one and sketch a feature they observed.
