What Students Need to Do: Students recognize four Virginia symbols in photos and drawings. They name each one and tell whether it is a flag, building, bird, or flower.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given mixed picture cards, students correctly select and name the Virginia flag, State Capitol, cardinal, and dogwood. They use visible details to explain each choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the cardinal with a robin, or the dogwood with any white or pink flower. They may mistake the State Capitol for the White House or confuse Virginia’s flag with the United States flag.
How to Assess It: Give students eight pictures, including the four Virginia symbols and four distractors. Ask them to circle and label the four Virginia symbols.

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort picture cards into Virginia symbols and not Virginia symbols, then name each selected card.
Show one symbol and ask, “What details help you recognize it?” Students draw and label one visible clue.
Play Symbol Bingo with pictures of the Virginia flag, State Capitol, cardinal, dogwood, and familiar distractors.
Show a photo of a Virginia welcome sign and have students identify which state symbols could help decorate it.
