What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize pictures of the bald eagle, dogwood, and cardinal. They name each symbol and tell whether it represents the United States or Virginia.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly matches each symbol to its name. The student identifies the bald eagle as a national symbol and the dogwood and cardinal as Virginia symbols.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the cardinal with other red birds or call any white flower a dogwood. They may also think all three symbols represent only Virginia or only the United States.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a bald eagle, dogwood, cardinal, and one unrelated item. Ask students to name the three symbols and sort them under United States or Virginia.

Ways to Teach It
Give students picture cards to sort onto United States and Virginia mats, then have them name each symbol aloud.
Ask, “Which symbol would you choose for our class, and why?” Record each student’s answer in one sentence.
Play Symbol Bingo with pictures of the bald eagle, dogwood, cardinal, and familiar distractors such as a robin, rose, and flag.
Look for symbols on Virginia signs, coins, seals, or license plates, then discuss what each picture tells people about a place.
