Virginia SOL 2.4

2.4 is a Standards of Learning history and social science standard. These are the skills expectations under it.

  locating the Virginia and United States capitals and Capitol buildings

• 2.4.b

  explaining the meaning behind symbols including, but not limited to the American flag, bald eagle, Washington Monument, Liberty Bell, and Statue of Liberty

• 2.4.c

  learning about the meaning of the American flag and the words chosen in the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem

What Students Need to Do

Students locate Richmond and Washington, D.C., on a map and identify each capitol building. They explain what major national symbols represent and put key words from the Pledge and national anthem into their own words.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly label both capitals and distinguish capital from capitol. They identify symbols from pictures, explain their meanings, and describe words such as allegiance, liberty, and justice.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse a capital city with a capitol building or name Washington, D.C., as Virginia’s capital. They may think the flag’s stars represent presidents or repeat familiar words without understanding them.

How to Assess It

Give students a map and three symbol pictures. Ask them to label Richmond and Washington, D.C., explain one symbol, and define liberty in their own words.

   Match photo cards of symbols and capitol buildings to meaning cards, then place the capital cities on a floor map.
