What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate key memorials, parks, rivers, and event sites on a map. They match each place to the correct person or event. They explain how land, water, distance, or weather shaped what happened there.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly place the Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Valley Forge, the Delaware River, and Yellowstone on a map. They describe each place and give a clear connection between its geography and its history.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the Jefferson Memorial with the Lincoln Memorial or think the presidents lived there. They may think Washington crossed the Delaware at Valley Forge. They may also treat Yellowstone as a memorial rather than a national park.

How to Assess It

Give students five place cards and a labeled map. Ask them to place each card, match it to a person or event, and explain one geography connection.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place labeled picture cards on a large floor map, then connect each site to its person or event with yarn.

  2. Ask, "How did the river, cold weather, or natural land affect what people did at each place?"

  3. Play a matching game with cards showing places, people, events, and geographic features.

  4. Use a Yellowstone visitor map to plan a route and explain how mountains, rivers, or roads affect where visitors can travel.
