What Students Need to Do: Students explain the hardships Washington's army faced at Valley Forge and during the Delaware River crossing. They tell how leadership and persistence helped the army continue fighting.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can place the river crossing before the winter camp at Valley Forge. They can explain that the crossing led to victory at Trenton and that training strengthened the army.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Valley Forge was a battle or that the Delaware crossing happened there. They may also think Washington crossed alone or that his army had plenty of food and warm clothing.
How to Assess It: Give students pictures of Valley Forge and the river crossing. Ask them to write one challenge and one result for each event.

Lesson moves
