What Students Need to Do: Students identify what each October observance remembers. They explain that Columbus’s voyage changed history, while Native peoples already lived in the Americas. They connect the Yorktown victory to the end of the Revolutionary War.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students match each observance to the correct people, event, and date. They explain why some communities honor Indigenous peoples instead of Columbus. They describe Yorktown as a major American and French victory over Britain.
Common Misconceptions: Students may say Columbus discovered an empty land or was the first person in the Americas. They may think Yorktown ended the war immediately. They may also confuse Columbus’s voyage with the Revolutionary War.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket with three prompts: explain each October observance, name who lived in the Americas before Columbus, and state why Yorktown mattered.

Lesson moves

Have pairs place picture cards for Native communities, Columbus’s voyage, and the Yorktown surrender on a large floor timeline.
Ask students to write two sentences explaining why different communities may choose different names for the same October observance.
Play a clue-matching game using cards labeled 1492, 1781, Native peoples, Columbus, Yorktown, American forces, French forces, and British forces.
Compare a local October calendar with a Yorktown museum event notice, then discuss what each community chooses to remember.
