What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name the two October observances and tell what each remembers. They connect Indigenous Peoples’ Day with Native peoples and Yorktown Victory Day with the American victory at Yorktown.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students match each observance to the correct people, place, or event. They explain each match in one clear sentence without saying Columbus discovered an empty land.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think Columbus and the Yorktown battle were connected or happened at the same time. They may also think Indigenous peoples were one group or lived only in the past.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of a Native community and the Yorktown battlefield. Ask students to name the matching observance and tell what it remembers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students sort picture cards showing Native communities, Columbus’s voyage, soldiers at Yorktown, and unrelated events under two labeled headings.

  2. Ask, “Why might people remember the same October date in different ways?” Record student ideas on a class chart.

  3. Play a matching game with cards for each observance, its people, its place, and a simple description.

  4. Find both observances on an October calendar, then locate Virginia, Yorktown, Europe, and the Americas on a map or globe.
