Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students compare a flat map with a round globe. They read simple symbols and locate land, water, the United States, and Virginia.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name one way maps and globes are alike and one way they differ. The student can explain a basic symbol and point to Virginia within the United States.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a globe shows different places from a map, or that Virginia is outside the United States. They may treat symbols as actual objects or assume every blue area is an ocean.
How to Assess It: Give each student a simple map and a globe. Ask them to identify land, water, one symbol, the United States, Virginia, and one difference between the models.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a globe, a local map, and sticky notes to label land, water, the United States, and Virginia.
Ask, "How are a map and globe alike, and how are they different?" Record one class example of each.
Play Symbol Match by pairing picture cards for roads, parks, schools, and water with matching symbols on a simple map.
Use a neighborhood map to trace a familiar route and name where students pass land, water, roads, or community places.
