What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read simple maps and globes to find places, land, water, cities, and roads. They use north, south, east, and west, then draw a map with the parts a reader needs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can locate Virginia, the United States, major continents, and oceans on a map or globe. Their own map has clear symbols, a title, a key, and a compass rose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a map with a globe or think blue areas always mean rivers. They often reverse east and west, leave symbols unexplained, or treat Virginia and the United States as separate countries.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank neighborhood map. Ask them to add a road, water, a city symbol, a title, a key, and a compass rose, then circle what is east of the water.

Ask students to explain how a map key helps someone who has never seen the map before.
Play Compass Rose Simon Says, using commands such as take one step north or point west.
Study a local park map and plan a route from the entrance to a playground, pond, or picnic area.
