What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine a paper map and a globe. They tell how both show places, land, and water, then explain that a map is flat and a globe is round.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names at least one way a map and globe are alike and one way they differ. The student can point to land and water on both.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a globe is only a ball or that every map shows the whole world. They may also confuse flat and round with the shapes drawn on each tool.
How to Assess It
- Show students a map and globe. Ask, “Tell me one way they are alike and one way they are different.”
