What Students Need to Do: Students explain what the flag represents and what its stars and stripes show. They put key words from the Pledge and anthem into their own words.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify 50 stars for the states and 13 stripes for the original colonies. They explain that allegiance means loyalty and connect anthem phrases to freedom, bravery, and the flag.
Common Misconceptions: Students may switch the meanings of the stars and stripes or think the Pledge and anthem are the same. They may think allegiance means obeying a person rather than showing loyalty to the country.
How to Assess It: Give students a picture of the flag and ask: “What do the stars and stripes show, and what does allegiance mean?”

Lesson moves

Build a paper flag with 50 star stickers and 13 strips, then label what each part represents.
Ask students to write one sentence explaining why people make a pledge and one sentence explaining why countries have an anthem.
Play a vocabulary match game using cards for allegiance, republic, liberty, justice, anthem, and flag.
Examine photos from a school event or baseball game and list ways people show respect during the Pledge or anthem.
