What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn the words and purpose of two common patriotic traditions. They identify and demonstrate customary ways people show respect during flag ceremonies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can join in or follow along with the words in the correct setting. The student can name and model actions such as facing the flag, standing quietly, and placing a hand over the heart.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the spoken pledge with the song or mix up their words. They may think respectful participation means everyone must speak or sing, rather than recognizing quiet, attentive behavior.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a flag ceremony and ask, “What could you do to show respect, and which patriotic tradition might happen here?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards showing flag ceremony behaviors, then have them sort the cards into respectful and distracting actions.
Ask students to draw and label one way people may show respect during a flag ceremony.
Play short audio clips and have students signal whether they hear the spoken pledge or the national song.
Examine a photo from a school assembly or sporting event and identify how people respond when the flag is presented.
