What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify five Virginians and connect each person to the Union or Confederacy and a specific leadership role. They explain how each person’s actions affected the war.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain that Lee and Jackson led Confederate forces, while Scott planned Union strategy. The student can describe Carney’s and Beaty’s courageous Union service and battlefield leadership.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every Virginian supported the Confederacy. They may confuse Scott’s Union strategy with Lee’s and Jackson’s Confederate commands. They may treat Carney and Beaty as generals rather than Union soldiers recognized for battlefield leadership.
How to Assess It
- Give students five name cards and five role cards to match. Ask them to choose one person and explain that person’s allegiance, actions, and leadership in two sentences.
