What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare Virginia communities from long ago with communities today. They identify changes in homes, schools, transportation, work, and technology using pictures, objects, and stories.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given two pictures, students name at least two changes and one thing that stayed the same. They point to a visible clue that supports each answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every old object disappeared or that all Virginia communities changed in the same way. They may also confuse a personal change, such as growing taller, with a community change.
How to Assess It
- Show an older and a current picture of a Virginia community. Ask, “What changed, what stayed the same, and what clues helped you decide?”

Give pairs mixed photos of homes, schools, and transportation to sort into long ago and today, then explain one clue.
Ask students to draw a Virginia street long ago and today, then write one sentence describing a change.
Play a matching game where students pair past and present versions of community places, tools, or transportation.
