What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate Werowocomoco and Jamestown on a simple Virginia map. They tell who lived at each place and describe why each location matters in Virginia history.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies Werowocomoco as a Powhatan leadership center and Jamestown as an English settlement founded in 1607. The student gives one accurate detail about each place.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Werowocomoco was an English town or that Jamestown existed before Virginia Indians lived in the region. They may also confuse Jamestown with Williamsburg or present-day Virginia.
How to Assess It
- Give students two labeled picture cards and a Virginia map. Ask them to place each card, name the people connected to it, and tell why it matters.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a Virginia map and picture cards, then have them place Werowocomoco and Jamestown near the correct rivers.
Ask, “How were Werowocomoco and Jamestown different?” and have students draw each place and dictate one sentence.
Play “Name That Place” with clue cards about Powhatan leadership, English settlers, rivers, and the year 1607.
Use a current Virginia map to trace a route from your school to each site and compare the distances.
