What Students Need to Do: Students identify George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. They explain that each man served as president and had ties to Virginia.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can match each president’s name to his portrait. The student can state that all four were presidents from Virginia without claiming every president came from Virginia.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the similar portraits or think the four men served at the same time. Some may think Washington was the only president or that every president was from Virginia.
How to Assess It: Give students four portraits and a name bank. Ask them to label each portrait, then finish: “These four leaders all _____ and were connected to _____.”

Lesson moves

Students match portrait, name, and Virginia home cards for Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe.
Ask students to write: “What do these four leaders have in common?” and support their answer with two facts.
Play President Memory using pairs of name cards and portrait cards for the four leaders.
Use a Virginia map to locate Mount Vernon, Monticello, Montpelier, and Highland, then connect each home to its president.
