What Students Need to Do
- Students identify each leader and explain his contribution to the new nation. They connect Washington with military and presidential leadership, Madison with writing the Constitution, and Henry with persuasive calls for liberty.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain that Washington led the Continental Army and became the first president, Madison helped shape the Constitution, and Henry argued publicly for independence. The student uses these facts to explain each leader’s lasting reputation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Washington wrote the Constitution or that Madison led the Continental Army. They may treat Henry’s speech as a law or assume all three men became president.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Complete three lines, “Washington helped by ___,” “Madison helped by ___,” and “Henry helped by ___,” then add one supporting fact to each.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs three portrait cards and six action strips, then have them sort two actions under each leader and explain one match.
Have students write three sentences naming the leader who shaped the new nation most and one action that supports their choice.
Play Who Am I using clue cards, with teams naming Washington, Madison, or Henry and earning a point only after explaining the clue.
Show a student council campaign speech, then ask students to mark its call to action and compare it with Henry’s persuasive approach.
