What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate January 1 on a calendar and explain that it begins a new calendar year. They name common ways families and communities mark the day.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to January 1 and place it after December 31. The student can explain the holiday in simple words and name one tradition.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think January 1 begins the school year or makes everyone one year older. They may confuse New Year’s Eve with New Year’s Day. Some assume every family celebrates the same way.
How to Assess It
- Give students December and January calendar pages. Ask them to circle January 1 and finish the sentence, “This date begins a new _____.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs December and January calendar pages, then have them place last-day and first-day cards before turning the page.
Ask, “What changes when December 31 becomes January 1, and what stays the same?” Students draw and dictate an answer.
Play a sequencing game with December 30, December 31, January 1, and January 2 cards.
Use a current calendar to circle January 1, then sort picture cards showing places that may be open or closed.
