What Students Need to Do: Students identify December 25 and explain that Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on this day. They describe religious and cultural traditions while recognizing that families celebrate in different ways or not at all.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name the date, explain the holiday’s Christian origin, and describe two common traditions. The student avoids assuming that everyone celebrates or follows the same customs.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think everyone celebrates, Santa Claus is part of the religious story, or all families follow the same traditions. Some may think the holiday began in the United States.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Write the date of the holiday, why Christians observe it, and one way a family might celebrate.

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort picture cards into religious traditions, cultural traditions, and traditions that could fit both groups.
Ask students to write: How might two families observe the same holiday differently?
Play a matching game with holiday symbols, dates, customs, and simple descriptions.
Examine a December calendar and local event notices to find ways the holiday appears in the community.
