What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify Christmas Day on December 25. They describe ways communities may recognize it, such as decorations, music, giving, gatherings, and public events.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can find Christmas Day on a calendar and name one community tradition. The student understands that families and communities may celebrate in different ways or not celebrate.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think everyone celebrates Christmas Day in the same way. They may confuse Christmas Eve with Christmas Day or think decorations and gifts are required.

How to Assess It

Ask students to draw one way a community may recognize Christmas Day. Have them complete the sentence, “A community may recognize Christmas Day by _____.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort photo cards of lights, concerts, toy drives, and family gatherings, then glue them under “community” or “family.”

  2. Ask, “How can neighbors recognize Christmas Day in different ways?” and record each child’s answer beside a drawing.

  3. Play picture bingo with December 25, decorations, music, meals, giving, and gatherings, naming each tradition when it appears.

  4. Look at a local December calendar and circle Christmas Day, then discuss nearby events, decorations, and public closings.
