What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify Christmas Day as December 25. They explain ways some communities observe it, such as decorations, worship services, meals, music, giving, and public closings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name the date and describe at least two community traditions. They use words such as “some families” and recognize that people celebrate differently or not at all.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are the same date. They may believe everyone celebrates Christmas, or that the holiday is only about Santa and gifts.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket that asks: “When is Christmas Day, and what is one way a community may observe it?” Students may write or draw.

Ways to Teach It
Sort picture cards showing Christmas traditions, other holidays, and everyday activities, then explain where each card belongs.
Ask, “How might a town look different on Christmas Day, and why?” Record student ideas on a class chart.
Play a clue game using cards for December 25, decorations, giving, meals, music, services, and public closings.
Examine a local December calendar or store closing notice and discuss how schedules can show community recognition of Christmas Day.
