What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify Election Day as a day when eligible citizens vote to choose leaders. They explain that voters mark ballots and the votes are counted.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can describe voting, counting ballots, and announcing a result in order. They know children may hold practice elections but do not vote in official elections.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Election Day celebrates one candidate or that the person they prefer automatically wins. They may confuse voting with guessing or believe children vote in official elections.
How to Assess It
- Ask, “What happens on Election Day, and how is a winner chosen?” Students may answer aloud or draw and label the steps.

Ways to Teach It
Hold a class election between two read-aloud books using paper ballots, a ballot box, and a tally chart.
Ask students to complete, “Voting is fair when…” and share one reason for their answer.
Sort picture cards into Election Day actions and nonexamples, such as marking a ballot, counting votes, opening presents, and blowing candles.
Examine a sample “I Voted” sticker and discuss when an eligible family member might receive one.
