What Students Need to Do: Students recognize the February holiday that honors George Washington, the nation’s first president. They connect his portrait and a calendar date with remembering his service.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify George Washington in a portrait and explain why the holiday honors him. The student can also recognize the common Presidents’ Day label on a calendar.
Common Misconceptions: Some children think George Washington is the president now or that every president served at the same time. They may think the Monday holiday always falls on Washington’s exact birthday.
How to Assess It: Show a portrait of Washington and a February calendar. Ask, “Who is this, and why is there a holiday for him?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs a February calendar, a Washington portrait, and a flag sticker, then have them mark the holiday and explain the symbols.
Ask students, “Why might a country choose a day to remember its first president?” then record one class sentence.
