What Students Need to Do: Students identify the February holiday that honors George Washington and connect him with his role as the nation’s first president. They explain that people observe the day to remember his leadership and service.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can recognize the observance on a February calendar, name George Washington, and say he was the first president. The student can give a simple reason people honor him.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Washington is the current president or that he created the holiday himself. They may assume the Monday observance is his exact birthday. Some think every president was born on that day.
How to Assess It: Show a February calendar with the third Monday circled and a portrait of Washington. Ask, “Who is remembered on this day, and why?”

Lesson moves

Place a Washington portrait card on a February classroom calendar, then add a caption explaining why he is honored.
Ask students to complete, “We remember George Washington because...” and share their sentence with a partner.
Play a picture match game pairing Washington, a February calendar, and the White House with simple fact cards.
Check a school or community calendar for the February observance and discuss why offices or schools may close.
