What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify George Washington Day as a February holiday honoring George Washington, the first U.S. president. They describe ways communities observe it, such as ceremonies, displays, stories, and public closings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain who George Washington was and why he is remembered on the holiday. The student can give a clear example of a community observance.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the holiday celebrates the current president or honors every president equally. They may also think it always falls on Washington’s actual birthday, February 22.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Who is honored on George Washington Day, and what is one way a community might observe it?”
