What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that Veterans Day honors people who served in the United States military. They identify a veteran and describe one respectful way to thank veterans.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can tell who veterans are and why people honor them. They can sort examples of veterans from examples of other community members.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every veteran is currently serving or has fought in a war. They may confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day or think it honors only one military branch.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a veteran, a firefighter, and a teacher. Ask, “Who might we honor on Veterans Day, and why?”

Ways to Teach It
Create thank-you cards for local veterans using drawings and one dictated or copied sentence.
Ask, “What could you say or do to show respect to someone who served in the military?”
Play a picture sort with veterans, active service members, and other community helpers, then explain each choice.
Invite a veteran or service organization member to share a uniform item, photograph, or short story with the class.
