What Students Need to Do: Students explain that veterans are people who served in the United States military. They describe how Veterans Day honors veterans and name ways people observe it.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can identify a veteran and explain why veterans are thanked on November 11. They can distinguish Veterans Day from Memorial Day in simple terms.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a veteran is anyone currently in the military or any older person. They may confuse Veterans Day, which honors all veterans, with Memorial Day, which remembers those who died while serving.
How to Assess It: Ask students to complete: “Veterans Day honors _____ because _____.” Then have them draw one appropriate way a community might observe the day.

Lesson moves

Create thank-you cards for local veterans, using drawings and one sentence about their military service.
Ask, “Why might a community hold a parade for veterans?” and record student answers on chart paper.
Sort picture cards into Veterans Day observances and unrelated events, then explain each choice to a partner.
Look at a local Veterans Day event notice and identify how the community plans to honor veterans.
