What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that Veterans Day honors people who served in the United States armed forces. They identify November 11 and describe respectful ways communities recognize veterans.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain who a veteran is and why veterans are thanked. They can distinguish Veterans Day from Memorial Day and Independence Day.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every veteran is currently serving or that only people who fought in wars are veterans. They may confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day, which honors service members who died.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit prompt: “Who do we honor on November 11, and why?” Ask them to answer in two complete sentences.

Create a class tribute wall using paper stars labeled with a veteran’s name, military branch, or a respectful thank-you message.
Write a response to the prompt, “What would you say to thank a veteran for serving our country?”
