What Students Need to Do: Students explain that Memorial Day honors U.S. military members who died while serving the country. They recognize flags, flowers, parades, and moments of silence as ways people remember them.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify Memorial Day from pictures of common observances. They can say who is honored and explain that the day is about remembrance, not celebrating war.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Memorial Day honors every veteran or anyone who has died. They may also describe it only as a day off, a picnic day, or the start of summer.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of a flag-covered cemetery, a birthday party, and a voting booth. Ask students which picture connects to Memorial Day and who is being remembered.

Lesson moves

Make a class remembrance wreath from paper flowers, then add a sentence explaining why people display flowers on Memorial Day.
Ask, “Why might people place flags and flowers at military graves?” and record student answers on chart paper.
Sort picture cards into “Memorial Day” and “Not Memorial Day,” then explain one choice to a partner.
