What Students Need to Do: Students explain that Memorial Day honors U.S. military members who died while serving the country. They identify ways people remember them, such as ceremonies, flags, flowers, and moments of silence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can tell whom Memorial Day honors and why people observe it. They can choose examples of respectful remembrance and explain their choices.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Memorial Day honors all veterans or celebrates the beginning of summer. They may also confuse remembrance activities with celebrations such as parties or sales.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of a remembrance ceremony, a birthday party, and a store sale. Ask students which picture best represents Memorial Day and why.

Lesson moves

Create a class remembrance display with paper poppies, flags, and student-drawn symbols of respect.
Ask students to complete the prompt, “On Memorial Day, people remember service members by...”
Play a picture sort using cards that show respectful remembrance, unrelated holidays, and everyday events.
Read a local Memorial Day ceremony notice, then identify the date, place, and ways the community will show respect.
