What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify Labor Day as a holiday that recognizes workers and their contributions. They name ways communities may honor workers, such as parades, gatherings, or thank-you messages.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain in simple words why people observe Labor Day. The student can name a worker and describe one way that worker helps the community.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think Labor Day celebrates doing chores or marks only the end of summer. They may also think it honors only certain jobs instead of all workers.

How to Assess It

Ask, "Why do people celebrate Labor Day?" Have each student draw a worker, then explain how that person helps the community.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out job picture cards and tools, then have students match each tool to a worker and explain the worker’s contribution.

  2. Ask, "Which worker would you thank on Labor Day, and why?" Record each student’s answer under a class drawing.

  3. Play Worker Charades, where students act out a job while classmates name the worker and tell how that job helps others.

  4. Take a school walk to notice workers, then make thank-you cards for the custodian, cafeteria staff, office staff, or bus drivers.
