What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work through challenging problems without giving up after the first attempt. They explain their thinking, work with others, ask for useful help, apply feedback, and track a small math goal.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student keeps working after an incorrect attempt, chooses another strategy, and uses feedback to revise. The student explains their thinking, listens to a partner, and checks progress toward a goal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think good mathematicians answer quickly and never make mistakes. They may ask for the answer instead of a clue, copy a partner’s work, or ignore feedback after finishing.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Solve 47 + 28 in two ways. Mark where you changed your plan, then explain how feedback helped you revise.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 30 linking cubes and challenge them to build three different equal-height tower sets, recording each attempt.
Ask, “What can you do when your first plan fails?” then have students name one strategy they will try next.
Play Error Detective with worked addition examples, awarding a point for finding the error and another for explaining a correction.
Plan a class snack order with a $20 budget, then revise choices after a partner points out a calculation error.
