What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate carefully and use correct math words, symbols, and units. They show their steps clearly enough for another person to follow and check.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes correct equations, calculations, symbols, and units. The student uses place-value words and explains each step clearly. The answer matches the work and is checked for reasonableness.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave off units, misuse the equal sign, or write digits in the wrong place-value column. They may also use vague phrases like “I just knew” instead of naming a strategy.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Solve 36 + 27. Show your steps, write a complete equation, and explain how you checked your answer.”
