What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use numbers, symbols, labels, and math words carefully. They count, measure, record, and explain in ways that another person can follow.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write numbers and symbols correctly, label answers, and match equations to drawings or stories. They check their work and explain their steps clearly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may skip or count an object twice, reverse operation symbols, or give an answer without a label. They may think neat handwriting alone makes work precise.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia has 8 apples and gives away 3. Draw the situation, write an equation, and label the answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Have students build groups of seven counters, match each group to a number card, and ask a partner to recount and check.
Show two student explanations and ask, “Which explanation is clearer, and what exact words or labels make it easier to understand?”
Play Precision Detective with picture and equation cards containing skipped objects, reversed symbols, or missing labels for students to find and fix.
Measure pencils with linking cubes, record each length as “___ cubes long,” then compare results and explain any differences.
