What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students communicate mathematical thinking with accurate calculations, clear symbols, defined variables, labels, and units. They choose a reasonable level of accuracy and explain each step without ambiguous notation.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student shows correct steps, uses equal signs properly, and labels quantities and graph features. The student rounds only when needed and states the level of accuracy used.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the equal sign as a signal to calculate rather than a statement that two expressions are equal. They may omit units, round too early, leave graphs unlabeled, or use symbols without defining them.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A phone plan costs $18 plus $6 per gigabyte. Write and solve an equation for a $48 bill. Show steps and label the answer.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Measure classroom objects twice with millimeter rulers, record units, compare discrepancies, and agree on a justified level of precision.

  2. Display two worked solutions for 3(x − 2) = 15, then ask which is clearer and what revisions prevent ambiguity.

  3. Play Error Hunt: teams correct unlabeled graphs, missing units, rounded intermediate values, and misused equal signs on solution cards.

  4. Compare two grocery discounts, calculate final prices to the nearest cent, and write a recommendation naming assumptions and units.
