What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students communicate mathematical thinking with accurate calculations, clear symbols, defined variables, labels, and units. They choose a reasonable level of accuracy and explain each step without ambiguous notation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student shows correct steps, uses equal signs properly, and labels quantities and graph features. The student rounds only when needed and states the level of accuracy used.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the equal sign as a signal to calculate rather than a statement that two expressions are equal. They may omit units, round too early, leave graphs unlabeled, or use symbols without defining them.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A phone plan costs $18 plus $6 per gigabyte. Write and solve an equation for a $48 bill. Show steps and label the answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Measure classroom objects twice with millimeter rulers, record units, compare discrepancies, and agree on a justified level of precision.
Display two worked solutions for 3(x − 2) = 15, then ask which is clearer and what revisions prevent ambiguity.
Play Error Hunt: teams correct unlabeled graphs, missing units, rounded intermediate values, and misused equal signs on solution cards.
Compare two grocery discounts, calculate final prices to the nearest cent, and write a recommendation naming assumptions and units.
