- Students communicate math clearly and accurately. They choose correct symbols and words, include units and labels, calculate carefully, and explain how they know an answer is reasonable.

- Students use numbers, symbols, labels, and math terms correctly. They calculate carefully, check their work, and explain each step clearly enough for a classmate to follow.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may omit units, use an equal sign to mean “the answer comes next,” or give unclear explanations. They may also rush calculations and copy numbers or symbols incorrectly.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: “Mia has 4 bags with 6 marbles in each bag. Write a labeled equation, solve, and explain your answer in one sentence.”

Give pairs rulers and classroom objects to measure, record each length with units, and compare results for accuracy.
Show two solutions to 7 × 8, then ask students to write which explanation is clearer and why.
