What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use accurate calculations, clear labels, correct symbols, and appropriate units. They explain each step so others can follow their reasoning. They check answers and report values at the requested level of accuracy.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students calculate accurately and check that answers make sense. They label units, define variables, use symbols correctly, and round only when directed. Their written steps are clear enough for another student to follow.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think precision means writing more decimal places, even when those digits are not justified. They may omit units, round during intermediate steps, or use unclear symbols. They may also give an answer without checking whether it is reasonable.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A rectangle measures 4.7 cm by 3.26 cm. Find its area, show each step, include units, and round the final answer to the nearest tenth.

Ways to Teach It
Pairs measure three classroom objects with rulers, record values and units, then compare how measurement choices affect reported precision.
Display two solutions to 3(x − 2) = 15. Students write which is clearer and explain why each step is valid.
Run an error-hunt relay with cards containing missing units, early rounding, unclear symbols, and arithmetic mistakes.
