What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use numbers, symbols, units, labels, and math words accurately. They calculate carefully, explain each step clearly, and check whether answers are reasonable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce accurate calculations and label answers with the correct units. Their symbols, graphs, tables, and written explanations are clear enough for another student to follow without guessing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may leave off units, labels, negative signs, or operation symbols. They may round too early, use an equal sign to mean “next step,” or give vague explanations such as “I just knew.”
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A rectangle is 8.5 meters by 4 meters. Find its perimeter and area, label both answers, and show each step clearly.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs rulers and three classroom objects to measure twice, record with units, and resolve any differences in their results.
Post two solutions with missing labels and vague phrases, then ask students to identify every place a reader could misinterpret the work.
Run an error hunt where teams correct signs, units, decimal placement, and unlabeled graphs on prepared solution cards.
Have students compare two grocery unit prices and write a recommendation using exact prices, quantities, units, and appropriate rounding.
