What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate carefully and record each step so another person can follow it. They use correct symbols, labels, units, and math terms, then check whether answers are reasonable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students align digits correctly, carry units through a problem, and write equations that preserve equality. They can find an unclear or inaccurate step and revise it precisely.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may round too early, misalign decimal points, or treat the equal sign as a signal to calculate. They may omit units, use unclear labels, or give an answer without checking it.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A ribbon is 3.75 meters long. Mia cuts off 1.8 meters. How much remains? Show aligned work, include units, and explain your check.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs rulers and classroom objects to measure, record with units, compare results, and resolve differences by checking ruler placement.
Project two solutions to the same problem and ask, “Which is clearer and more accurate, and what should the other writer fix?”
Use error detective cards with decimal alignment, missing units, incorrect symbols, and early rounding for teams to identify and correct.
Give students a grocery price list and ask them to calculate a labeled total, estimate first, and use the estimate to check reasonableness.
