What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students count objects one at a time and give an exact total. They use clear math words such as more, fewer, equal, circle, and square. They check that drawings, numerals, and answers match.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student moves or marks each object while counting and gives the correct total. The student uses specific math words and checks that the numeral matches the amount. The student notices and fixes counting or labeling errors.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may skip objects or count the same object twice. They may use vague words like bigger when they mean taller, longer, or more. They may also name a shape by its position rather than its features.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a picture of eight scattered stars. Ask, “Count the stars, write the numeral, and tell how you made sure each star was counted once.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 10 buttons and numeral cards, then have them count, organize, match, and check each other’s totals.
Show two block towers and ask, “Which tower is taller, and what words and measurements prove it?”
Play Spot the Counting Error by counting objects incorrectly, then have students identify and correct the exact mistake.
Have students set one cup for each classmate at snack time, then count both groups and explain whether the amounts match.
