What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students keep working when a math problem feels hard, try a different plan, and explain their thinking. They work with classmates, ask specific questions, use feedback, and track a small math goal.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student tries another plan when the first one fails and uses tools such as counters, drawings, or fingers. The student explains an idea, listens to a partner, asks a clear question, and uses feedback. The student names a small goal and checks progress.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a wrong answer means they should stop or wait for the teacher. They may ask for the answer instead of naming what confuses them, or ignore a partner’s suggestion.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture problem with more than one possible strategy. Ask them to show two attempts, explain one change they made, and name a next-step goal.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 12 linking cubes to build three different towers, draw each attempt, and revise one tower after a partner suggestion.
Ask, “What did you try when your first plan did not work, and what will you try next?”
Play Strategy Swap: students solve picture problems, trade solution cards, and use one partner idea to improve their work.
Plan snack bags for four classmates, then check whether each bag has the same number and fix any mistake.
