What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how they found a math answer using objects, drawings, numbers, or words. They listen to a classmate’s idea, check whether it makes sense, and ask or answer simple questions.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives an answer and uses counters, a drawing, or counting words as evidence. The student checks another person’s idea and explains why it works or where it went wrong.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think giving an answer is enough, without showing how they know. They may accept a classmate’s claim without checking it. They may also say an idea is wrong but cannot explain the error.

How to Assess It

Show a card with six dots and say, “Mia says there are seven dots. Is she right? Show how you know.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. In pairs, students build eight with two-color counters, explain their count, then have a partner recount and ask one question.

  2. Display two drawings for 4 + 2 and ask, “Do both show six? What in each drawing proves your answer?”

  3. Play Reasoning Detective by reading counting claims while students show agree or disagree cards and explain their choices.

  4. Set out five cups and six napkins, then ask students whether each cup gets one napkin and what must change.
